The shipments of notebook-PC panels with LED backlights grew by 63% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) to 2.1 million in the third quarter from 1.3 million in the previous quarter, according to the related report. Taiwan TFT-LCD panel suppliers AU Optronics Corp. (AUO) and Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. (CMO) ranked the world’s third- and sixth-largest, respectively, LED-BLU notebook PC panel makers during the period.

The growth is due to the cost reductions and the launches of new notebook PC models. In the third quarter, the penetration of notebook panels with LED backlights reached a new high of 5.4%, compared with 3.4% in the second quarter. With the increasing popularity of LED-BLU panels triggered by the low-cost and new backlight structures, it’s expected to reach 12.2% penetration rate in the fourth quarter. During the third quarter, 12.1-, 13.3- and 15.4-inch were the leading sizes of LED backlight notebook panels. It is expected that new 16:9 panels will largely adopt LED backlights in 2009.

In addition, as notebook-PC brands including led flood light, Dell and Acer are planning to launch many new LED notebook models in the first half of 2009, it is expected that the penetration rate of LED-BLU notebook panels will exceed 25% in the second quarter of 2009.
