LED industry and hence better quality products

Many small LED lighting companies are suffering and may not see light at the end of the tunnel," said Wei Li, board secretary of Dongguan Kingsun Optoelectronic Co Ltd (002638.SZ), a leading Chinese LED street lighting manufacturer.

"There won't be so many enterprises five to 10 years from now," she told by phone from the firm's headquarters in the city of Dongguan in southern Guangdong province, an LED manufacturing centre.

Industry consolidation may temporarily disrupt the LED high bay light chain given 60 to 70 percent of China's capacity is built for exports, analysts say. But in the long run, the shakeout should lead to a healthier Chinese LED industry and hence better quality products.

Shares of the more than two dozen Chinese LED players listed in China and Hong Kong, some of which attracted private equity investment before their listings, have tumbled as their profits evaporated. Ledman Optoelectronic Co Ltd (300162.SZ) is down 48 percent from a March peak, and Shenzhen Unilumin Group Co Ltd 300232.SZ has lost 37 percent.

This event is all about ensuring a positive LED lighting user experience

Soraa will manage and run the testing using a custom-built testing panel comprised of an array of commonly used transformers and dimmers and Soraa’s 12VAC LED MR16 lamps. The panel can also accommodate participating companies’ transformers, dimmers, and 12VAC or 120VAC (E26 only) LED lamps or fixtures. Testing of components and fixtures at the PlugFest booth (Booth 746/748) will be available at no charge on a first come, first served basis on February 13th and 14th.

“Manufacturers benefit because Lighting PlugFest addresses compatibility—an obstacle to widespread LED lamp adoption; designers benefit because they can specify with confidence; and end users benefit because they will know that a particular product combination works,” said Eric Kim, CEO of Soraa. “This event is all about ensuring a positive LED lighting user experience.”

According to Ysewijn , Azzurro has spent about one year in preparation for volume production. LED makers can either procure Azzurro-made finished GaN-on-Si LED epitaxial wafers for LED chips, or procure Si-substrate wafers with GaN films for LED epitaxial wafers.

LED chips made from GaN-on-Si epitaxial wafers have a 5% lower luminous efficiency than LED chips made from sapphire wafers, however, the unit price of ERU0.20/(US$0.27) square cm for the former is lower than that of EUR0.30 for the latter, Ysewijn pointed out.

Marco photographers have been using that type of lighting for years

As we know, Google purchased Motorola Mobility and with that purchase came thousands of patents for mobile devices. A document posted online shown that there was one patent missing and Google has just applied for it. That patent was one for a multi-LED flash to be embedded on the back side of a smartphone, or tablet for that matter. The idea behind a multi-LED flash is so that a low light photo situation can have different levels of light and will create a better exposure for the photo.

Phones on the market today typically have one LED flash, or maybe a dual-LED flash, but nothing is available in the multi-LED sector. According to an online source, an image shows the LED flash would form a circle around the camera lens, while another image shows the LED flash above and below the camera lens, seemingly giving Google two options to develop the flash. Seeing the flash LED’s in a circle pattern is nothing new to photographers that have been using light rings for years to get better, more even exposure for images, but it is completely new in the smartphone game.

Marco photographers have been using that type of lighting for years and now that it might come to the smartphone market, it will open a whole new world when it comes to the quality of an image shot via a smartphone camera sensor. More light is almost always better than low light when it comes to images. Google is not saying whether they will reserve the patent for its own developing or if it will pass it along to the Motorola Mobility branch that they own. The patent could also be opened up for license fees to other companies, so Google has plenty of options.

Even though a company is granted the right to develop a new product, does not mean that they will be doing so anytime soon. It would be nice to see smartphones with some advancements in camera technology that does not only revolve around the megapixels the camera can produce. The new patent for Google could mean changes in the design for the Nexus brand smartphones and tablets, or it could mean a new look for some Droid handsets from Motorola. Motorola has a phone called the X phone that is one the list of to be released, but it is not clear if this technology will end up there or not.

LED industry is faced with great opportunities and unprecedented challenges

The LED market has seen a growing market and policy support, with LED lights becoming trendy products globally, especially in developed regions such as Europe, the USA, Japan, South Korea and beyond. In China, the application of LED products picked up in the year 2008, including LED street lights, solar LEDs, LED full-color displays, consumer electronic LED lights and so on. During 2009 and 2010, China's LED industry had a prosperous development, with certain technological breakthroughs. Meanwhile, the development of LED lighting will drive the progress of LED driver power supplies and other LED related industries. According to relevant departments' predictions, China's LED driver power supply will reach over RMB7 million, and the market scale will expand to RMB1.75 billion.

Relevant data shows that the number of LED patent applications in China increased significantly in recent years. According to the "Analysis Report on Semiconductor Lighting Patent Risk" by the Development Research Center of the State Intellectual Property Office, patent applications for LEDs in China cover 22 countries and regions, with Japan, South Korea, the USA, Germany and the Netherlands ranking as the top five. From the view of SeekIC, a subsidiary of Hangzhou Weiku Information & Technology Company, China's LED development plays an indispensable role in the international LED market with thriving development potential, though the core LED technologies and patents are under the monopoly of other countries. the objective of further expanding this position

The business year 2011/12 closed in June with the best result since the company was founded. Combined sales with subsidiary company Optronik Berlin rose by 27% to 30.3 million euros – following on from 23.9 million euros in the business year 2010/11. The company achieved improvement in the area of display metrology. A number of major orders from leading brand manufacturers for consumer electronics had been drivers for this growth.

Toshihiko Karasaki, President of Konica Minolta Optics, sees the acquisition of the company with a high global reputation as aligning with the Group’s strategy: “Our goal is to have a leading global position in all our corporate divisions and to integrate international talent within our group. Instrument Systems is the best company in LED lighting measurement to consistently implement this strategy. Together, we now cover all segments of display and light-source measurement and we are positioned as number one in this area.” Konica Minolta Optics and Instrument Systems will cooperate closely on product development in future with the objective of further expanding this position.

PIDA project manager Murphy Lin says that the results of the survey suggest that the island’s optoelectronics manufacturers are becoming guarded about the direction in which their industry is going. “This survey reflects the rather low confidence of the industry in Taiwan,” Lin comments. “It’s not good news, but there are still promising developments in each sector.”

For the LED sector, streetlights offer a good market. The state-run Taiwan Power Corp. recently cancelled a subsidy it had given to city agencies to help pay electrical bills for streetlights, after the central government announced that another planned hike in electricity fees would be delayed because the previous hike had alleviated the losses suffered by the company due to a long-term price freeze. The cancellation is expected to accelerate the move by city agencies to install LED streetlights.

Since its establishment in 1996, Epistar has firmly believed that technology innovation is the foundation for being a leader in the industry, and that acquisition and strategic deployment of intellectual property rights, such as patents, is a key to success.

In Epistar’s extensive patent portfolio, ITO technology is one core technology that Epistar’s founders developed while they were at ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute). In the early stages of LED technology development, thin metal was adopted for current spreading, but had the drawback of hindering light extraction. Epistar’s founders realized ITO’s advantages of being transparent and conductive, and developed the implementation of ITO in LEDs to improve current spreading and light extraction. Furthermore, due to its low contact resistance, ITO can be a good ohmic contact layer, and its optical characteristics are suitable for optical field tuning. Epistar’s advancements in this innovative technology can be found in its patents that have been issued in countries around the world, including in China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and the United States.

Which cast shadow on the rapid progress made by Nichia in China

For instance, excluding the footholds in Beijing and Shanghai, to cope with rising demand in China, the firm planned to extend distributorships in Guangzhou, Southern China, as well as increase production capacities 20% there.

Influenced by anti-Japan sentiments due to the sovereignty of the Diaoyutai islet, many Chinese operators refuse to choose LED components from Japan, which compounds Nichia’s attempt to encroach on the long-established presence of Philips and Cree in China, all of which cast shadow on the rapid progress made by Nichia in China.

Recently, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) gave Xcel Energy approval to install 529 LED streetlights in the city as a two-year test. The company had told the city it would start installation in 2012.

Most Minnesota cities hire Xcel to handle their street lighting. The test will allow the company to gather information on how much they cost to install, how they perform and how long they last, factors that will help Xcel determine how much to charge cities that use them.

the positive psychological impact of which is well documented

Reduced energy consumption is particularly important in areas of the hospital that, due to health and safety, must be lit for 24 hours a day, such as washrooms and car parks. Light Planet’s LED floodlights, which are fitted in the car park, operate at only 49W and offer a very high-quality light output and a life-span of approximately 7 years. Compared with the previous traditional 150W fixtures that need replacing every 2 years, this product alone facilitates a major reduction in energy and maintenance bills and has achieved a saving of around £17,000.

The benefits that LED technology offers in terms of hygiene and patient care are also important drivers for adoption in this sector. For example, the LED edge-lit ceiling panels installed at Royal Sussex County Hospital have a single flat surface that makes them much easier to clean than conventional four-tube fluorescent fittings. Furthermore, the clearer, whiter and more natural light output of LEDs offers a more comfortable environment for patients and staff alike and mimics daylight, the positive psychological impact of which is well documented.

With improved patient experience, up to 68% less power consumption and over 50,000 hours continual use, the financial and environmental benefits of an LED retrofit programme are clear. Barry Kearton, PFI Estates Manager, Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust, certainly sees the advantages: “The LED retrofit has delivered not only the cost savings that we hoped to achieve but has also made a valuable contribution towards reducing our energy consumption in line with the Trust’s low-carbon ambitions.”

Marl International aims to help customers waste less light with a new Lighting Scheme Design service that provides specific recommendations on the best energy efficient LED lighting to use inside and outside buildings, car parks or industrial sites. The service is being launched at the LuxLive exhibition in Earls Court, London, from 6-7 November 2012 (Stand E02).

lighting applications in the entertainment

The combination of the these multi-color LED arrays together with the proprietary TRR technology from Wavien, provides low-cost, high-output solutions for spot lights, moving heads, and other lighting applications in the entertainment and projection markets.

Wavien's TRR technology recaptures light lost in standard optical system back to the output of the system, transforming it back into useable light. The normally wasted colored light from each LED is captured by the TRR reflector and reflected back to the same LED for recycling by its unique optical properties. As a result, each colored LED recycles the wasted light independently with increased brightness. Although brightness improvements are dependent on color, an output improvement, as high as 100%, can be achieved.

"Wavien continues to advance the LED light recycling technology and offers outstanding brightness by recovering and recycling high angle light from the LED that is normally wasted with traditional LED coupling systems," stated Dr. Kenneth Li, President and CEO of Wavien, Inc., who is also the inventor of the recycling technology. Dr. Li added: "This new TRR technology invention further improves brightness of many entertainment lighting systems currently using Luminus Color Mix LEDs and pico-projector systems using Ostar LEDs."

This performance improvement is provided by adding a simple TRR reflector with an aperture to standard multi-color LED packages. The diameter of the aperture, which determines the amount of recycling, and the total size of the reflector can be scaled to meet the user's needs.

The next step is to further reduce the dimensions

The run up and dimming behaviour of HID lamps has been significantly improved by implementing new electronic control processes and a special filling blend. The colour appearance here remains constant. Improved ignition characteristics also ensure that the new HID lamps can be switched as quickly as energy saving lamps for example. The housing dimensions are compact despite such modifications so that HID lamps can be flexibly integrated into differing applications with low effort, thus also becoming suitable for everyday use. The next step is to further reduce the dimensions.

All successful HID and LED test results will be transferred in the forthcoming SEEL project sequence from the laboratory into the demonstration phase to achieve even better adaptation to real operating conditions. These technologies in the near future may consequently lead to new products for general and automotive lighting.

Charles Lemaire, one of the original inventors noted on all four patents in this lawsuit has also been credited with patents for Lockheed Martin, Nuance Communications and other major companies.

LED Tech, whose place of business is Tyler Texas, has filed a formal complaint with the court in Delaware against Apple for patent infringement involving four of their patents that they describe as being "patents by assignment." The patents involved in the case include 6,095,661, 7,393,119, 6,808,287 and 6,488,390.

A recent report released by US consultancy, Consumer Reports, has revealed that of the 90% of Americans who have opted for energy efficient light bulbs, 75% are choosing CFLs over their LED counterparts, despite the latter’s superiority in efficiency, life span and light quality.

Examples of this kind of purchasing behaviour are particularly relevant to the UK lighting industry – and especially the LED high bay light- during the current period of overhaul. EU regulations have ushered the incandescent bulbs of the past offstage in a total phase out and it remains to be seen what consumers will turn to now the familiar is out of the picture. If LED technology is to truly flourish in the domestic sector, it is vital that the impending gap in knowledge and familiarity is addressed and that widespread awareness of the alternatives and their differences is fostered.

the LED die to be driven to higher current levels and in a denser configuration

We developed LARCH especially for typical applications in the LED high bay light industry and adapted it to the industry's requirements. But we could also imagine the system finding application in other processes in which ammonia and hydrogen are generated. Therefore we are looking to continuously develop the technology," concludes Davies.

LED Engin, Inc., a leader in high lumen density LED products, will be demonstrating emitters and LED modules that enable the size of entertainment lighting products to be significantly reduced on Stand 2-S11 at the PLASA 2012 exhibition, 9-12th September, Earls Court, London, UK.

The company’s LuxiGen platform of white and multi-colour compact emitters generate the high luminous flux density demanded in entertainment lighting, particularly for spot beams, distance lighting effects and in dynamic lighting scenarios. Patented thermal management technology allows the LED die to be driven to higher current levels and in a denser configuration than industry standards, without adversely affecting operating life. LED emitters are up to 80% more efficient than traditional tungsten lighting and this combination of features in LED Engin products enables lighting fixture designers to at least halve the size of their products, and in some cases reduce the size by an order of magnitude. The other benefits provided by LED Engin’s emitters are very high lux-on-target, precise beam control and effective ‘in-source’ colour mixing within the primary lenses of the emitters. Beams can be tightly focused (Led linear high bay light) using Total Internal Reflection (TIR) secondary lenses that also minimize unwanted glare, and individual dies within each emitter can be driven with different current levels to provide accurate, flexible colour control. The compact emitters also enable zoom lenses to be used and these will be demonstrated for the first time at the show.

Laws mandating higher levels of performance work

Matt Prescott, who founded the Ban the Bulb campaign seven years ago, said: “I think the talk of widespread panic is massively overdone, and that the vast majority of the public have adjusted to using the next generation of lighting technologies with the absolute minimum of fuss and drama. Lightbulbs offer a useful and timely case study for how greater energy efficiency could be achieved in a wide variety of household appliances and even cars and houses. Laws mandating higher levels of performance work and work quickly.”

James Russill, technical development manager at the Energy Saving Trust, said the ban is making a “real difference” to national energy consumption: “Fitting just one energy-saving light bulb can save you on average £3 a year – and by swapping all the incandescent bulbs in your home for energy-saving alternatives, you could save around £30 a year from your energy bills, and 110kg of carbon dioxide.”

Katy Bryan, sustainability manager at Philips UK, said lighting consumes 19 per cent of electricity globally. “This poses a major challenge in a world facing resource scarcity and climate change. Energy-efficient lighting can help and legislation that raises the profile of energy-efficient technologies, such as LED, is naturally welcomed. However, more can be done to educate consumers on the choices available to them and to ensure they understand that there is no need to compromise, as energy efficiency does not have to mean poor design or performance.”

Currently, customers get caught in wireless lighting solution which is incompatible. To solve this problem, The Connected Lighting Alliance will be engaged in developing steady eco-friendly wireless lighting control system by building up a platform to communicate with people who are responsible for making standards and regulators, to make wireless lighting solutions be interoperable and easy to operate.
