According to Korean media, the capital city Seoul has scheduled to install more LED lamps in public, and encourages the private sector to further expand the scope of installation.

LED products will be installed in public places including subway stations and streets. And the city government offices are planned to use LED lightings by the year of 2018, aiming for energy saving and promoting the development on LED lighting industry.

In addition, the government also extends this plan to the private sector by the year of 2030. It’s estimated that there are 800000 pieces LED lamps to be installed in public and 70000 pieces installed in private sector. It’s estimated to save electricity bills for $105 million per year.

What’s more, the government also intends to set up an intelligent lighting grid which contains 1.32 million energy saving streetlights. And to encourage the private sector to adopt LEDs, the city will provide a maximum of 1 billion won ($870000) loan with interest rate 2.5%.

ARC’s study is the first subject in a new series called “CHES Foundations”, which explains how CHES technology and CHES furnaces are enabling sapphire growth companies to meet increasing demand. Several ARC customers have already announced that their CHES sapphire has been qualified by multiple LED manufacturers.

ARC Energy’s CHES furnaces are unique in several ways. One key advantage is dramatically higher material utilization due to sapphire growth on the c-plane. This approach produces large diameter substrates at a significantly lower cost. Greater than 75% material utilization can be achieved using c-plane ARC Energy CHES furnaces while other methods are limited to less than 35%. CHES furnaces are also highly automated—a key feature which brings operator costs down and provides consistent output.

CHES furnaces are designed to produce higher performance sapphire at larger wafer sizes compared to older technologies. A CHES furnace produces high-yield sapphire up to 10" diameter, providing higher efficiency downstream in the LED manufacturing process and upstream as c-plane growth significantly reduces waste.

The study results show CHES-grown sapphire is capable of production-level performance. As the HB-LED market expands, CHES gives sapphire growers significant advantages, including higher yield, a scalable technology, and better LED chip performance. The production line has been specially modified to handle PCB boards of up to 600mm long, which are commonly required to replace conventional lighting products.

We plan to make some of the LED components for smart phones

For Globetronics Technology Bhd, its chief executive officer Heng Huck Lee said the group was currently working with three US customers on high brightness LED modules. He disclosed that the company was in the commercial stage production for multi-colour high brightness high bay light in green-house lighting. And the group had no plans to tap into the automotive LED segment, which was still driven by low and medium-power LEDs. "We are still very focus in the high-power LED segment. We plan to make some of the LED components for smart phones and tablets next year," he said.

Research Bhd has started to build a 90,000 sq ft facility at the company's existing site to cater to the demand for LED test and process handling system in 2013."We are getting ready to make LED testers that are able to test high brightness LED requiring high voltage power. The new AC or DC high voltage LED would require a new tester to meet the test specification," Elsoft CEO C.E. Tan said.

MMS Ventures Bhd MD T.K. Sia said the group was now manufacturing for the second half 2012 customised multi-functional LED test equipment that could perform productions process functions such as singulating and sorting.

"The challenge now is to integrate more and more production processes into the LED test equipment, which will help lower the cost of LED high bay light production. Japan and the United States provide strong competition in the multi-functional LED test equipment segment," he said.A multi-functional LED would be priced in the international market at between US$100,000 and US$500,000, depending the integrated features and functions.

Solid State Technology Association, the global leader in the development of standards for the microelectronics industry, announced the publication of a new series of standards for component level testing of high-brightness/power LEDs. Development within JEDEC’s JC-15 Committee involved LED industry leaders, and resulted in the new JESD51-5x series of standards aimed at thermal characterization of power LED components.  The series is in compliance with the International Commission on Illumination (CIE)’s existing LED measurement recommendations.

As the efficiency of power LEDs has improved over time (now in the range of 20-40% depending on the type of LED), the use of high-brightness/power LEDs as a lighting source has become widespread in diverse applications in numerous industries. In these use cases, thermal design is critical in order to ensure expected LED lifetimes and light output, and the design process requires accurate thermal data for LED components. Prior to the publication of the JESD51-5x series, a lack of widely accepted thermal testing standards for power LED components meant that published data sheet information was often questionable. Therefore, development of the new standards was urgently needed.

Both LED manufacturers and LED integrators who assemble LEDs to substrates will benefit from these new standards. They include clear recommendations for which data to include on LED data sheets, as well as test environments and procedures defined specifically for power LEDs, removing previously existing ambiguity about how thermal performance of an LED package or a metal core printed circuit board (MCPCB) assembled LED device is identified.

The new standards will be featured in a presentation at the upcoming CORM (Council for Optical Radiation Measurements) 2012 event on May 31st in Ottawa, Canada. Dr. Andras Poppe of Mentor Graphics and Budapest University of Technology and Economics, and a key author of the new standards within JC-15, will speak on the topic of “New JEDEC thermal testing standards for high power LEDs”.

This workforce is larger than that of any other region worldwide, and roughly half of it is employed in China. Currently, global LED industry is in the process of changeful period. In Japan, nuclear power shortage has driven up demand for LED lamps after the March 11 earthquake. North American market should also meet the requirements of electric safety, electromagnetic compatibility and power consumption. Freemont, California based company Group4 Labs, has developed an agreement with Alfred University researchers to develop a sacrificial substrate to support the firm's GaN-on-Diamond technology, aiming at improving efficiencies in solid state lighting and advance the sensing and communication industries.

The project will be overseen by two Inamori Professors of materials science in the Kazuo Inamori School of Engineering at AU, S.K. Sundaram and Scott Misture. And they are to develop a substrate material for Group4 Lab’s novel technology which combines diamond and semiconductors to extract heat rapidly, efficiently, passively, and cost-effectively.

Sundaram pointed out that the micron-sized diamond coating is first applied to a sacrificial substrate. When the sacrificial substrate is removed, the diamond coating will then serve as the substrate for further processing of the semiconductor coating.

The International Commission on Illumination-Taiwan (CIE-Taiwan) is a country-level member of CIE that focuses on scientific issues concerning light, lighting, colors while taking part in, or dominating, international standard-making processes in this regard. In the most commonly used process for the production of blue spectrum chips- including white LEDs -gallium nitride-based semiconductor layers (GaN) are grown on sapphire substrate (Al2O3) using epitaxial growth methods like MOCVD. A metallic wafer, intended for the dissipation of heat, is then bonded to the semiconductor layers at high temperatures using various joining technologies. Stresses caused by different coefficients of thermal expansion can lead to cracks in the semiconductor layers. To prevent these defects, the led high bay light metal wafersubstrate ideally possesses the same coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) as sapphire.

Molybdenum is commonly used for suchwafer substrates. This material offers good thermal conductivity and is very heat-resistant. However, molybdenum has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than sapphire (Al2O3). That’s why PLANSEE developed wafer substrates made from the molybdenum-copper composite material R670 especially for sapphire-based and high temperature-bonded LED chips. R670 has a thermal conductivity of 170 W/mK and, with 6.7 ppm/K, the same coefficient of thermal expansion as sapphire (Al2O3).

Taiwan government has designated the green-energy industry, notably photovoltaic and LED sectors, as one of the six emerging industries to be led high bay light fostered and will set strategies to develop in line with Taiwan’s economic development.

Taiwan’s LED industry generated revenue totaling NT$184.6 billion (US$6.1 billion) in 2011, and leads the world in output volume. And besides the LED and photovoltaic sectors, Taiwan’s green-energy industry overall generated revenue of NT$410 billion (US$13.6 billion) in 2011. Over the past five years beginning 2007 Taiwan’s photovoltaic industry has tripled its revenue from NT$53.5 billion (US$1.78 billion), with the island’s LED industry having nearly quadrupled its revenue from NT$64 billion (US$2.1 billion) over the past four years starting 2008, said Ma.

Ma pointed out that the island’s foreign trade revenue in 2011 create a new record of US$5,899 billion, mostly replies on foreign sources for 99% of energy supplies. As a result, the government has to pursue an energy and industry policy to address such weakness.

It’s also nice to know the products were assembled in the USA.” The product was designed and engineered at the LED tronics factory in Southern California.

Philips Lighting and Christchurch International Airport Ltd (CIAL) with assistance from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), is replacing 1,700 light fittings in the terminal with LED technology, providing high quality inviting lighting that not only stacks up aesthetically, but also delivers major energy savings.

LED lighting is up to 80% more efficient than traditional incandescent lighting, so Christchurch Airport will reduce its annual lighting load by more than 60% when the new LED and energy-efficient lighting is installed. As well as saving 70 tonnes of carbon emissions each year, the reduction in energy use will have significant benefits for the bottom line.

Powerhoods are suspended above the race car in the garage or awning and provide illumination, as well as electrical power and pneumatic air outlets. Fluorescent tubes are traditionally used as the primary source of light but these were prone to failure due to transport vibrations.“We were finding that by the time we unpacked the powerhoods after transit several of the tubes failed to start and had to be changed”, explained Showtrax Managing Director Andy Britnell. “Sending out replacement tubes was a costly solution so we looked at alternative technologies.”

LED technology is a great leap forward in energy-efficient lighting for our customers

Originally modeled after the Department of Energy’s (DOE) ENERGY STAR? program for solid-state lighting products, the QPL covers categories that ENERGY STAR doesn’t include in its program. Each of the products listed on the QPL must be a high-performing commercial LED product and must meet the DLC's minimum performance requirements. The program requires a third-party independent evaluation from product test reports by accredited labs as evidence of performance, including efficacy and color with LM-79 reports and lumen lifetime with luminaire operating temperature and LM-80 reports.

Without a comprehensive plan for evaluating commercial LED products in the absence of a national standard, DesignLights? Consortium Qualified Product List can be an invaluable resource for energy efficiency commercial programs. When these incandescent bulbs get phased out in the next year

The demonstration project is intended to test the lights’ performance in windy and low-light conditions. “We’re not really worried about the panels charging,” said ODOT project manager Paul Christiansen. “We think that will be fine.” The real concern is how the lights will hold up in led linear lighting winds. The original lights have yet to be removed. “I’ve heard the plan is to remove the electrical system when we’re sure the solar-powered [system] will work,” Christiansen said.

According to Electrician Steve Benz, they are putting on an energy efficient clinic just educating the customers on the benefits of fluorescent to incandescent and the new products, LED. Fluorescent and LED bulbs can last anywhere from 10 to 40 years. That's much longer than the average 6 months with the old incandescent bulbs. “When these incandescent bulbs get phased out in the next year or so we're going to see the prices down as far as LED and fluorescent," said Benz. Lighting experts say you have until 2014 until its lights out for incandescent bulbs.

In his opinion, 100 watt incandescent light bulbs will no longer be sold in August, and all sales of incandescent bulbs will be phased out gradually. However, he says it's been a hard transition trying to get people to see the light and try the new bulbs.

But people had many of their questions cleared up about fluorescents and LEDs when they took advantage of the free information booth this Saturday.The energy efficient clinics will continue each Saturday in January at 10 am.And as they spread the word, electricians say they hope bulb by bulb people will start shining the way to a more energy efficient future.

Puget Sound Energy ,Washington state’s oldest local energy utility, has provide a new instant rebate for up to $10-off led high bay light for residential electric customers. It is PSE’s first LED bulb rebate for residential electric customers.

PSE customers can receive an instant rebate of up to $10-off a variety of ENERGY STAR-qualified LED bulbs. Depending on the type of bulb, the after-rebate price to customers ranges between $15 and $50. In 2010, PSE was among 14 utilities and energy efficiency organizations to partner with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Bright Tomorrow Lighting Prize (L Prize) competition to field test energy-efficient LED bulbs to replace the standard 60-watt incandescent bulb.

All studies were conducted using blind samples of GT ASF sapphire material as well as LED grade sapphire from other sources. The lack of heat given off by LED lighting allows further energy savings to be made through reduced use of air conditioning systems. The machines do not have to work as hard to cool down additional heat in the shop, which is beneficial for open refrigerators.

Walgreens received GE’s Retailer of the Year award to acknowledge the company’s transition from F28 to F25 linear fluorescent lamps, a strategic move that enabled the company to achieve a 9 percent energy savings while also extending its re-lamp cycle—how frequently it changes bulbs—by 10 percent. At the end of 2011, Walgreens will have more stores than any led high bay light customer in the world using F25 linear fluorescent lamps. Walmart has also set a goal to use 100-percent LED lighting in all of its 5,366 stores through new construction and retrofitting.

LED Retailer of the Year criteria included outstanding contributions to the LED industry by retrofitting at least 20 percent or more of stores to LED; demonstration of significant energy reduction—must have experienced at least 20 percent energy savings or more by moving to an LED technology; and LED technology should have visually improved the appearance of their stores in a way that is recognizable by customers.

GE Retailer of the Year criteria included outstanding contributions to the lighting industry by using energy efficient products in 80 percent of more of their stores; demonstration of innovative led linear high bay light techniques that have improved the visual aesthetics of their stores; and demonstrated positive impact on the community.

A recent meeting held Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has made a conclusion that the ministry must revise current strategies on Taiwan’s LED industry development, and the MOEA pledged to work out revised strategies within a month.

Careful thermal management of the overall system

The LED lighting plan on London's Tower Bridge was unveiled earlier this year when GE, along with London 2012 sustainability partner EDF Energy, entered a public-private finance deal with Mayor Boris Johnson and the City of London Corporation to install a new energy-efficient lighting system on the Tower Bridge.

Careful thermal management of the overall system and drivers gives the BayLight a L70 rated life of over 60,000 hours at 40 degrees C and over 100,000 hours at 25 degrees C. With an IP66 Rating for the LED panel, the BayLight is certified for damp location. Furthermore, the BayLight contains no mercury or lead.

The optional integrated occupancy sensor further enhances the energy savings delivered by the BayLight. Unlike linear fluorescent lamps that tend to lose light output at lower operating temperatures, the BayLight's performance is enhanced at lower operating temperatures. At these lower ambient temperature ranges, the LED light output of the BayLight can increase by up to 6% while dramatically extending its rated life.

A college football icon, Michigan Stadium was built in 1927 and is the largest stadium in the United States, consistently boasting game day crowds of more than 100,000 fans.
