a lack of widely accepted thermal testing standards for power LED components meant

Solid State Technology Association, the global leader in the development of standards for the microelectronics industry, announced the publication of a new series of standards for component level testing of high-brightness/power LEDs. Development within JEDEC’s JC-15 Committee involved LED industry leaders, and resulted in the new JESD51-5x series of standards aimed at thermal characterization of power LED components.  The series is in compliance with the International Commission on Illumination (CIE)’s existing LED measurement recommendations.

As the efficiency of power LEDs has improved over time (now in the range of 20-40% depending on the type of LED), the use of high-brightness/power LEDs as a lighting source has become widespread in diverse applications in numerous industries. In these use cases, thermal design is critical in order to ensure expected LED lifetimes and light output, and the design process requires accurate thermal data for LED components. Prior to the publication of the JESD51-5x series, a lack of widely accepted thermal testing standards for power LED components meant that published data sheet information was often questionable. Therefore, development of the new standards was urgently needed.

Both LED manufacturers and LED integrators who assemble LEDs to substrates will benefit from these new standards. They include clear recommendations for which data to include on LED data sheets, as well as test environments and procedures defined specifically for power LEDs, removing previously existing ambiguity about how thermal performance of an LED package or a metal core printed circuit board (MCPCB) assembled LED device is identified.

The new standards will be featured in a presentation at the upcoming CORM (Council for Optical Radiation Measurements) 2012 event on May 31st in Ottawa, Canada. Dr. Andras Poppe of Mentor Graphics and Budapest University of Technology and Economics, and a key author of the new standards within JC-15, will speak on the topic of “New JEDEC thermal testing standards for high power LEDs”.

the entire value chain from front to back

Market researchers at IMS Research have predicted strong growth for opto semiconductors such as LED components and laser diodes with average growth rates of around five percent worldwide in the coming years. The fastest growth is expected to come in China during the same period, with an average growth rate of ten percent. This growth potential extends beyond components. According to a market survey conducted by McKinsey, the rapidly growing Asian region today already accounts for around 35 percent of today’s global general lighting market. This share is expected to increase to 45 percent by 2020. Forecasts predict the Chinese market alone, worth over €8 billion today, to more than double by 2020. In fiscal 2011, Osram generated about one fifth of the Group’s revenue in the Asia-Pacific region, where it employs over 16,000 people. This workforce is larger than that of any other region worldwide, and roughly half of it is employed in China. Osram has marketed products in the region for about 80 years, covering the entire value chain from front to back.

Currently, global LED industry is in the process of changeful period. In Japan, nuclear power shortage has driven up demand for LED lamps after the March 11 earthquake. Also, benefiting from the ban imposed by certain countries against selling incandescent light bulb of high wattage in 2012, Europe has become one of the most fast-growing LED markets in the world besides Japan. Meanwhile, South Korean government and Chinese government have constantly promoted and supported the LED industry and have achieved considerably outstanding results.

As an old saying, “Devised strategies, winning thousands of miles away”. How to get a hold of the market prospects and have a firm grip on the changing market dynamics and adjust the operation strategy accordingly becomes the pressing issue in 2012.

The sessions at the LEDforum will dissect the development of the LED industry in the next five years, the channel strategy of the Chinese LED industry and the challenge facing it. As for the concurrent sessions in the afternoon, they will focus on the prospects for the LED industry and the LED lighting market, the key development of the LED manufacturing process and equipment, providing a thorough analysis on the LED market.

these energy savings while improving illumination quality

We installed the WWCWs at the box office. This area is open to daylight on two sides and we have recently needed to reprogram the fixtures for a dimmer setting as the employees complained that they were too bright", explains Herrick.

A well-lit environment creates a more positive shopping experience for customers at retail locations of all sizes. As such, the retail industry in the U.S. spends nearly $20 billion on energy each year according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with lighting as the largest energy drain. The EPA also estimates that a 10% reduction in energy costs for average retail outlets could increase profit margins by 16% annually. An advanced lighting control system can serve as an indispensable tool in accomplishing these energy savings while improving illumination quality.

An advanced lighting control system allows for individual controlling of each lighting fixture or peripheral device in retail spaces from big-box merchandisers to boutiques. All devices are networked and centrally controlled through a central software interface. This allows for addressable dimming or switching of light fixtures independent of electrical circuiting for the purpose of lighting control and energy management.

Once addressable dimming controls are implemented throughout the space, a number of advanced lighting energy management strategies – such as daylight harvesting, load shedding, smart time scheduling, task tuning, occupancy sensing and personal control – can help to optimize energy performance. While some of these strategies have been used independently for some time, the ability of advanced systems to seamlessly integrate and deploy them on a property-wide basis is yielding much greater energy savings.

Astronics will provide a complete suite of instruments panels

Astronics Luminescent Systems , a subsidiary backed by Astronics Corporation , has been selected by Learjet Inc., a subsidiary of Bombardier, to supply LED-based cockpit lighting panels for its newly introduced Learjet 70* and Learjet 75* light business jets.

Astronics will provide a complete suite of instruments panels that are illuminated with LEDs which provide increased reliability while reducing power consumption.According to the company, the HIGH BAY.M is an indoor highbay solution exclusively distributed by Noribachi in the United States. Noribachi’s HIGHBAY.M fixtures deliver an astounding bright, natural white light that allows fruit and vegetable inspectors to determine ripeness without taking a trip outside, a serious inconvenience that the previous HID lighting had necessitated with its yellow tinge.

Noribachi LED lighting is also completely unaffected by the freezing temperature of the 34?F environment, whereas traditional lighting suffers serious lifetime shortages and turn-on delays. The Noribachi HIGHBAY.M fixtures provide so much clean light that in one room Agro-Jal Director Eric Gamble was able to scale back from 25 fluorescent fixtures to only 7 LED fixtures while achieving superior light output and quality. This not only made the Noribachi solution as cost competitive as fluorescents, but yielded the further benefit of keeping the toxic fluorescent bulbs away from food products.

The HPR-LED collection is a complete family of luminaires – 2x4, 2x2, 1x4, 1x2, 1x1 and wallwash - which has been closely designed and manufactured around the U.S. Department of Energy’s LED Luminaire Methodology. Following that methodology, Finelite is able to provide long lasting, sustainable LED luminaires for general lighting. The HPR-LED collection now holds an industry best 10-year warranty.

LED fixtures to be reliably controlled without additional wiring

This innovative hybrid bulb combines the best features of an incandescent, CFL and halogen bulb in one. The result is an instant-on technology that uses 75 percent less energy than an incandescent bulb and lasts eight times longer. The ENERGY STAR qualification is just one more validation of Led high bay light how truly special this light bulb is,” says Jeff Patton, general manager of consumer marketing, GE Lighting. “It’s already been widely embraced by consumers and received top-notch award nods. We’re so pleased that this latest recognition now conveys this important energy-saving distinction.”

GE engineers carefully crafted this bulb to eliminate the delayed start associated with the CFL bulb. They discovered a solution by nestling an instantly bright halogen capsule inside the swirl of a compact fluorescent light bulb. The halogen element comes on instantly and turns off once the CFL comes to full brightness, thus preserving the energy efficiency of the bulb. It’s also housed in the incandescent-shaped shell consumers are used to and has an extremely low amount of mercury: 1 mg. CFLs typically contain 1.5 mg to 3.5 mg of mercury.

Lumentalk turns existing electrical wiring into a stable, noise-free high-speed communications link for data, enabling LED fixtures to be reliably controlled without additional wiring. Furthermore, the technology is protocol independent, making it compatible with common dimmer and control standards: Triac, 0-10V, DALI, DMX, ELV.

Lumentalk enables traditional lighting systems to be upgraded to Led linear high bay light without the cost and hassle of opening up walls and ceilings to rewire for data – leading to a dramatic 30% reduction in total installation cost.
